Two months since the last post here - it must be time for a links-filled update! The most exciting piece of news is that the academic journal Social Text recently published a revised version of my 2010 Pop Conference paper, "Curtis Jackson and the Jeweled Skull." 2400 words about 50 Cent, video games and the State of Rap Today.
Meanwhile, the posting with my friends Carl and Margaux is still fast-paced over at Back to the World, our group blog. Torontoist interviewed us, we're on Twitter and Facebook, and new content is appearing every weekday. Here are my own favourite contributions there, although you should browse around my comrades' posts as well; lots of good writing to trawl through, and some of it, like Carl's "Toronto in Moving Pictures" (from Videodrome to Scott Pilgrim) or Margaux's consideration of Mind Game, is very Gutteral-friendly.
On Hergé, Burroughs, and Charles Burns' X'ed Out as the latest in a long line of alternate Tintins.
"Primordial Ink" (what we talk about when we talk about proto-comics).
On Guy Maddin's "Hauntings" and cinematic necromancy.
"A Can-Can on the Tightrope of Logic" (Notes on Eccentrism).
Morris dancing, Grant Morrison's Batman and ambivalence.
On Lil B, the bizarre, internet-ruling teenage rapper I'm obsessed with.
Vocal improvisation games and glossolalia.
The style of superhero costumes.
Minor dance crazes: What is their deal?
On R&B star The-Dream.
World Cup songs, from John Barnes to the vuvuzela.
A really long discussion of bounce music.
19 haikus about Prince.
